Q: Hi Bill! I am in serious need of some advice. I am 26 and about to move to a new city. I want to be the best and most attractive me I can be, however, I am having trouble deciding what hair colour I should have to achieve that.

From The Styling Edit Archives

Amanda is looking for her ideal hair colour (and cut).

As you can see from the photos, I have naturally ash brown hair. I have a lot of hair, but it gets split ends easily. Because I have very pale skin and blue eyes, I am trying to figure out if blonde is my ideal colour.

I also attached a picture of myself as a child, when I had blonder hair. Will blonde wash me out or make me shine? What is my ideal hair colour? Please help!

Amanda was blonde as a child.

PS: Any advice about haircut would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much! — Amanda

A: Amanda, thank you for asking.

I do think a lighter colour will wash you out… at this time in your life.

Your natural colour suits you so well. There are natural beauties of all hair colours and skin tones. You are one of those rare beauties with interesting bone structure as well.

Rather than a colour change, I would do a redistribution of your hair with a new part.

Deep side parted hair.

The way this opens up the face is priceless. It will frame your cheekbones and jawline, and open your eyes. "POW POW!"

I get the allure of the side bang; this is a good example.

Showing off an eyebrow, cheekbone and jawline is what this part will do for you.

Then there is the centre part, totally showing off the forehead—another way to open up your face.

Tucking behind the ear adds a bit more skin, which is a good thing with long hair. Sometimes long hair can become a blanket, so breaking it up and exposing skin is cool!

I can't help myself... here is another hair distribution that is good for opening up your face and showing off your natural beauty.
