Ask a Hairstylist: The Best Haircuts If You Have Cowlicks in the Front of Your Hair
Q: Dear Bill, you're so generous for offering your expertise to your readers. Thank you so much! I'm going to be 46 years old soon and would love a fresh, updated look that you think is right for me.
I don't have a natural part—I have cowlicks on both sides of my forehead. I'm also particularly self-conscious about my large forehead and my crooked nose.
About me: I'm 5'6", with brown/hazelish eyes and medium olive skin. I started greying in my early twenties, but my natural hair colour is medium brown with reddish undertones. I have thick, wavy and somewhat frizzy hair—and lots of it. Because it's coloured, it tends to be dry.
After I had baby number two last year, I decided to get rid of my long, layered locks and get a bob, which I grew tired of quickly. It's grown out a bit, but I'm not sure where I'm going with it anymore.
Please, Bill, let me know what you think I should do with my colour and my cut. I look forward to reading your advice! Thank you so much in advance. — Margaret
A: Margaret, thank you for your kind words and your consultation request. This is the haircut that I recommend for you—layered and to the collarbone. And with a middle part, if your hair will allow it with your cowlicks.
These modern and versatile layers will frame your face and accentuate your cheekbones. Parting your hair down the middle should balance your cowlicks and will create the illusion of a smaller forehead.
Consider adding long, skinny ends. This will help to disperse the thickness of your hair with the extra length, and will show off the layers.
Either way, you can wear it straight or rock your natural wave, enhanced with a curling wand.
Highlighting the cowlick in some cases can be beautiful. This is also the colour I would suggest for you:

I hope this helps. I am totally confident that you can make peace with your cowlicks.
