Reviewed: RMS Beauty Lip Liner, the Best Natural Lip Liner to Go with ALL Your Lipsticks

The only lip liner you need.

Lately, there's been a non-stop stream of launches from RMS Beauty, meaning they've now got almost every product you'd find in a mainstream makeup line—but with healthier ingredients, of course!

One of the new offerings is a curated collection of Lip Liners

From The Styling Edit Archives

Because I am compelled to purchase everything Rose-Marie Swift makes (I'm THAT obsessed), I recently snapped these up at The Detox Market. And I've been using them ever since, with so many shades of lipstick!

If you're looking for a high-quality, all-natural lip liner that you can wear with everything, keep reading for all the details...

About RMS Beauty

Rose-Marie Swift, founder of RMS Beauty.

In case you're not familiar with RMS Beauty, the "RMS" stands for founder Rose-Marie Swift, a renowned celebrity and editorial makeup artist. She created her line almost a decade ago, after suffering from health issues related to cosmetic chemical exposure. That's why all her products are:

  • Made with raw, food-grade and organic ingredients
  • Free of synthetic preservatives
  • GMO-free
  • Non-nano
  • Paraben-free
  • Cruelty-free

What I also love about RMS Beauty is that it's SIMPLE and EASY. It's all about user-friendly products, textures and colours... and the Lip Liners are no exception!

RMS Beauty Lip Liner

The RMS Beauty Lip Liner collection.

There are just three shades of this Lip Liner, and the thinking behind them is best described by Rose-Marie herself:

"I am a firm believer that lip liner should match your natural lip colour rather than the shade of lipstick," she says.

"If you follow this rule, you will see a more realistic result that is modern and softer in appearance. Choose from Daytime Nude or Nighttime Nude to match your natural lip colour.

"My one exception to the rule is red. Dressed-Up Red pairs perfectly with red lipstick to achieve a fabulous, natural red lip shade."

Got that? Unlike other brands (Bite, I'm looking at you), RMS Beauty will never have a 50-shade range of lip liners.

All you need is one nude, to match your lips, plus a red (if you wear red lipstick). That's it!

I've gotta say, I never thought about lip liner this way, but it makes total sense. Who has the budget, time or space to have a different lip liner to match every lip colour? I've tested out Rose-Marie's theory and she's right, nude DOES go with everything!

Packaging and Ingredients

RMS Beauty Lip Liner in Dressed-Up Red, Nighttime Nude and Daytime Nude.

The Lip Liners come in sturdy white plastic packaging. It's a MILLION times better than Bite's—if you own one of their Lip Pencils, you know what I'm talking about. There's none of that tip-breaking, cap- falling-off business with RMS Beauty. You can easily carry one of these in your purse without worrying about making a mess.

The size is quite "skinny," more so than a pen, and there is a precise tip that's perfect for lining.

They're not self-sharpening, but there is a handy little built-in sharpener if you twist off the base.

The built-in sharpener for RMS Beauty Lip Liner.

They feel lightweight, but don't worry—at 0.01 oz / 0.3 g, you're getting the same amount of product as in Kat Von D's Everlasting Lip Liner.

As for the ingredients list, it's short, and primarily composed of sunflower oil, beeswax and carnauba wax. I have to say, I was a little surprised to see sunflower oil, since Rose-Marie has been so against "cheap, rancid oils."

I can only guess that there was no other way to get the right texture here. As I've stated, I'm not too concerned about lip products versus what I put on the rest of my face (and even more importantly, body). Just be aware that these won't have the long shelf life of products like "Un" Cover-Up, which uses more stable oils such as coconut.

Colours and Texture

Swatches of RMS Beauty Lip Liner in Daytime Nude (top), Nighttime Nude (middle) and Dressed-Up Red (bottom).

So here you can see the three shades: Daytime Nude, Nighttime Nude and Dressed-Up Red. I'll be showing you them on my lips in just a moment!

The texture is perfect. The problem with many natural lip liners is that they're either too dry (and drag on the skin) or too oily (so the colour doesn't stay put and smears away).

RMS Beauty Lip Liners don't have these issues. They're creamy and glide smoothly across your lips, but they also have great "grip." Within a few seconds, they dry down semi-matte and deliver several hours of comfortable, rich colour.

Of course, they're not going to be as long-wearing as a "24-hour wear" liner from Make Up For Ever or Kat Von D. I'd still recommend those if you like to overline your lips quite a bit, and need it to stay through meals, etc.

Since RMS Beauty doesn't use any high-tech synthetic polymers, expect these to naturally fade after a few hours, especially if you eat or drink. Which is fine by me!

Below, you'll find a closer look at each shade. I filled them in all over my lips as best I could to show you the colours, but I wouldn't really recommend using them that way. I mean, you could, but the tips are small, and the pigment sets quickly, so it's a little challenging. I think they're better as liner, not full colour.

Note: If my skin looks a bit flaky here, it's because I'm trying to do nightly 1% Retinol!

Daytime Nude

RMS Beauty Lip Liner in Daytime Nude.

Daytime Nude is described as a tawny nude. This one is best if you have a naturally light tone to your lips.

Mine are darker, so you can see it's not quite a match at the edges, and wouldn't be believable if I overlined with it. I still like the colour, though, so I'll just wear it with clear or similar shades.

Nighttime Nude

RMS Beauty Lip Liner in Nighttime Nude.

Nighttime Nude is described as a deep rose taupe. If you have a lot of pigment to your lips, this is your colour.

For me, it's a Holy Grail—I absolutely love how well it matches my lip tone! I've tested it with everything from corals to pinks and it just works. I apply it after lipstick, not before, and it creates a lovely defined, soft edge that looks very natural.

Dressed-Up Red

RMS Beauty Lip Liner in Dressed-Up Red.

Dressed-Up Red is described as a classic red. It's very, very bright, with blue undertones, but I think you could get away with pairing it with warmer reds, too.

Unlike the nudes, where you're not meant to tell which is the liner and which is your lip, this shade is for times when you want a bold, precise edge. I love it with the RMS Beauty Lip Shine in Sacred to give it a more "finished" look.

These RMS Beauty Lip Liners will go with your entire lipstick collection.

You've got to love a brand that DOESN'T try to sell you on more colours. I love that about RMS Beauty, and this curated range of Lip Liners!

Now that I have Nighttime Nude, I can probably retire all my other lip liners. It looks good with everything in my lipstick collection—I don't even have to think about it!—so I will absolutely re-purchase.
