Ask a Hairstylist: The Best Wash-and-Go Haircuts for Fine and Wavy Hair
Q: Please help... I need hair advice! I am having a baby in less than a month, and I need a good wash-and-go haircut.
I'm 5'2" in height, and my hair is currently about four to five inches below my shoulders. It's medium brown in colour and naturally wavy, frizzy and fine—but I have a lot of it.
The problem is I have to straighten it every other day, as I don't know how to style it using my natural texture. It's also always flat on top.
Suggestions??? Thanks for the help! — Holly
A: Holly, thank you for requesting a consultation. I'm sure there are many expecting mothers who could use this advice.
If you have been straightening your hair for some time, it will take a while for your natural texture to spring back. The prolonged use of any hot tool will change the cuticle, which controls the texture.
Moisture is what hair needs to bring on the curl. Kevin Murphy has a product called Re.Store. It cleanses gently and restores moisture.
If you feel the need to use a shampoo every once in a while, his Repair-Me.Wash works.
Many first-time mothers have an abundance of hair during pregnancy. After birth, there are hormonal changes that make this extra hair and some of the other hair fall out. Don't be surprised by this, but best be on top of your conditioning routine.
If you plan on breastfeeding, then you will want a length that you can put in a ponytail easily. This will also suit your petite stature.
I think this is the perfect cut to work with your texture:
I especially like the side part on this, as it will work with your cowlicks and add volume:
To style these cuts, I would add a small amount of Re.Store to damp hair. (We use it as a leave-in conditioner as well—it's great for bringing out curl and masking damaged hair.)
Then layer a waxy product on top of it, such as Kevin Murphy Easy.Rider. Only use a small amount, and then comb your hair and scrunch the ends up towards the scalp.
After this, do not touch your hair until it is completely dry or you will bring back the frizz.
If your waves don't co-operate. add a few layers to loosen things up:
This is an option for if and when you feel like you have lost some hair from hormones:
I hope this helps you. Have a great time with your new adventure, Holly!
